hard word
: put the hard word on Ask forcefully for something in the expectation that you will not be refused. Originally the phrase was used of a man propositioning a woman, and was first recorded in 1923. It is now also applied to any manner of heavy-handed requests-'Michelle really put the hard word on me for a loan of the car'.
